University students across South Africa were protesting because they could not afford to pay for university. The #FeesMustFall movement was very big and sometimes very violent. The President set up this commission to ask: is free university education possible in South Africa?

Found that fully free higher education was not immediately feasible given fiscal constraints. President Zuma then announced free education for students from households earning under R350,000 per year — going beyond what the commission recommended.
